Former Waratah and Wallaby captain Nick Farr-Jones AM has been elected to the Board of the New South Wales Rugby Union as an independent director.
Mr Farr-Jones has taken up the role to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of former Chairman Edwin Zemancheff who stepped down from the Board to fully concentrate on his position as Chairman of NSW Waratahs Limited.
"Nick’s standing as a former Sydney University, Waratah and Wallaby captain is without question and he will bring to the Board this Rugby intellect as well as his outstanding legal and business skills," said Will Jephcott, NSWRU Chairman.
"With the new Waratahs Board concentrating specifically on the professional arm of the game, the NSWRU Board is dedicated to the wellbeing of the participation and community levels of Rugby in this state.
"To that end, I know Nick’s passion for the future of Rugby in NSW and I know this will be reflected in his Directorship."
Mr Farr-Jones said he is excited and looking forward to taking up the role as a NSW Rugby Director.
"It was a great honour in my playing career to wear the sky blue jersey of the Waratahs and it’s another great honour to become a NSW Rugby Board Director," said Mr Farr-Jones. "I’m still extremely passionate about the grassroots game and I know there’s a lot of work to be done to keep the sport moving forward in this state.
"I think there’s exciting times ahead and I’m looking forward to playing a role in that."
Nick Farr-Jones made his NSW Debut in 1984 before earning his first Test Cap later that year against England at Twickenham on the successful Grand Slam tour. He captained NSW for the first time in 1987, was named Wallaby captain in 1988 and led Australia to its first ever World Cup victory in 1991.
He retired in 1993 with 46 state and 63 international caps, while his 36 appearances as Wallaby skipper was a record at the time for any country’s Test captain.
In 1992 Mr Farr-Jones was named a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to Rugby and in 1999 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame. In 2008 he was inducted into the Wallaby Hall of Fame and was named a Classic Wallaby Statesman.
Mr Farr-Jones is a former Senator of the University of Sydney, Director of NRMA, Councillor of the City of Sydney and Patron of the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Foundation. He is currently a Director of the Wesley Mission and recently created his own charity known as Touch Life raising awareness and funds to support Wesley’s work in the homeless space.
After graduating from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Mr Farr-Jones practised law for a decade before joining French Investment Bank Societe Generale for 14 years. In 2009 Mr Farr-Jones joined Taurus Resource Fund which specialises in investment in the mining and resource sector.
