The Blues ended their Super 14 season with a relatively comfortable 30-20 bonus point victory over the Chiefs with Rudi Wulf scoring two tries and one of them for the record books.
The match had little bearing on the tournament as both teams were out of the running for the play offs but will decide where both teams finish in the last ever Super14.
The Blues bonus point try was scored by Rudi Wulf (pictured) in the 60th minute and was the 500th try scored in this season's Super14 tournament.
He scored another with six minutes remaining on the clock which put the result beyond doubt.
Ironically the Hurricanes were still in with a chance of making the play offs at the start of the final round but the Blues end the season higher than the Hurricanes due to their points differential.
The match at Eden Park served mainly to demonstrate why both teams had faded from the semifinals race several weeks before the end of the regular season.
The Blues have a huge amount of backline talent but again showed an inability to sustain structure or control for long periods.
The Chiefs, who were finalists last year, finished the season in 10th place, paying for their weakness at set pieces and lack of a settled backline combination.
"We finish the season just outside the top four," Blues captain Keven Mealamu said.
"The boys tried hard this year and it's just a pity we couldn't go all the way and make the semis."
The first half was scrappy and disjointed, most notable for the number of try-scoring opportunities squandered by both sides.
The Blues led 12-6 at the interval with tries to Paul Williams and Benson Stanley while flyhalf Stephen Brett managed only one of his first three shots at goal.
Halfback Alby Mathewson, apparently poised for All Blacks selection, scored the opening try of the second half, extending the Blues' lead to 19-6.
The lead might have been greater if not for the superb work in cover defense of Chiefs halfback Brendon Leonard.
Captain Liam Messam scored the Chiefs' first try in the 57th minute but Wulf's two tries ensured the Blues would end a disappointing season with a win.
New Zealand sevens representative Save Tokula ended the match with a brilliant solo try for the Chiefs.
